When we first found 5519 Highridge Street, we were drawn to its potential. It had the character we wanted, especially in the basement, and we loved the idea of making a home our own. We also immediately appreciated the quaint, close-knit feel of Arbutus. It offered the kind of community where traditions still matter and friends are never far away.
Over the years, some of our favorite details have been the simplest ones. The large front windows fill the living room with natural light, and the privacy decals on the front door create little rainbows that dance across the room in the afternoon. It is one of those unexpected touches that makes the house feel special. We have also loved having a separate den in the basement. Even in a cozy home, it gives everyone room to relax, work, watch television, or enjoy their own hobbies without feeling disconnected.
We have worked hard to make the home more comfortable and functional. During our time here, we added a new stainless steel refrigerator and stove, installed new windows and two new storm doors, replaced the attic access door, and added a new attic fan to improve circulation. We also installed a fully fenced backyard, creating a private space for pets, gatherings, gardening, or simply enjoying some time outdoors.
Life in Arbutus has been another part of what made this home so enjoyable. We love having the movie theater nearby, Food Truck Wednesdays at the firehouse, the Arbutus 4th of July celebration, and a neighborhood that truly embraces Halloween and the major holidays. People decorate, care for their homes and yards, and help create a place that feels welcoming and full of personality.
Some of our favorite local spots include Sorrento’s for pizza and subs and El Gran Pollo on Wilkens Avenue for rotisserie chicken and sides. Southwestern Car Care has also been a trusted neighborhood business. We were originally attracted to the area in part because of Arbutus Elementary School, but it was the community, convenience, and friendships that made us feel at home.
What we will miss most is how easy it has been to see our friends and stay connected to the people and places we love. We hope the next owners will appreciate the afternoon rainbows, the comfortable spaces, and the welcoming spirit of Arbutus as much as we have.
